Trip 11 – Loxahatchee Slough

As much as we would like too, we cannot go away every weekend. Palm Beach country has many outdoor parks to explore. One of the parks is Loxahatchee Slough. This is a 12,957 acre site that has many habitats. You can bike, hike, fish, kayak and many other activities in the park. This park is part of the Jeaga Wildways which encompasses over 160,000 acres. Wayne and I love going to this park to kayak. The paddling is easy and there is no current. You feel like you are getting really away from everyone and just relax and enough nature. The launch is off PGA Blvd across the canal from Karen T. Marcus Sandhill Crane Access Park. The kayak/canoe trail is much, much, less crowded than Riverbend. Most times you will not even see another person. We have see deer, alligator, turtles, snail kites, swallowtail kites, blue herons and many other wading birds. We love the Water Lillies, dragonflies and damselflies. The lilies and dragonflies are numerous and are easily photographed. There is a portage area about 1 mile in but Wayne and I often do not get this far as there is just so many things to photograph. The trail is also a bit overgrown with water plants so it is a tougher paddle than other areas.

Did you know there are over 40 species of dragonflies in Florida?
