Wayne and I escaped for the Labor Day weekend. The trip was unexpected and we were able to enjoy a few days with our friends. Brevard county is only 2 hours north of where we live so we left after work to get settled in. Friday would be a whole day of exploring. Our campsite was in the middle of the campground with no water access. Our friends, who are better planners, had a water access campsite where we launched our kayaks.
The weekend was spent exploring Scout Island, kayaking the Indian River Lagoon, riding our bikes to Pelican Island NWF, and relaxing. Getting up at 3:30 am to watch a launch from Cape Canaveral is not what Wayne thinks is relaxing. Though he did say afterwards he was glad he woke up. We were the only ones out at that hour, the sky was clear, and we were able to see and then hear the rocket. The park filled up for the holiday weekend but everyone was well behaved. Our neighbors told us about the beach access for great surging called Spanish House. It is regarded as the best location in the area for surfers. It is a small path to the beach across the street from the marina.
Indian River Lagoon did not disappoint. It is a haven for wildlife and you just never know what you are going to see. On our bike ride we saw Spotted Eagle Rays mating. On our Kayak trips we saw Bottlenose Dolphin hunting mullet and Manatee relaxing as well as numerous birds. It was so relaxing sitting in the kayak, watching the rain fall, hearing osprey and kingfisher call and then hearing dolphin breath while hunting for lunch. It was just spectacular.
