We spent 3 nights at Watson Mill Bridge State Park exploring the bridge, waterfalls, and trails. This bridge is the longest covered bridge in Georgia at 229 feet. It spans the South Fork River and was built in 1885 by Washington W. King, the son of the famous covered bridge builder Horace King. Georgia had over 200 covered bridges at one time, there are less than 20 that remain. I had only known of covered bridges in the north and was excited to see a working bridge up close.
The weather had cleared and we were able to hike many of the trails in the park. The trails were well marked and meandered through the trees along the South Fork River giving you many views of the covered bridge. The wildflowers are starting to emerge, though I think we were still a few weeks early for peak wildlfowers.
