Our the way to our second stop on our trip we stopped at Fort Clinch State Park in Fernandina Beach and checked out the fort and the campsites for a later stay.
We arrive in mid afternoon to Huguenot Park, which is a city park on the north side of the St Johns river. Mayport Naval Air Station is directly across the river. Being on the river was neat as you could see the big shipping freighters going in and out of the port as well as seeing the naval ships. The bad part was that our troops were practicing their helicopter skills and were flying over the park and beach for a majority of the day and into the early night. So it was a bit loud. I would not pick this park to stay out if you are looking for peace and quiet. You can also get locked out of the park. Once the gates are locked at 11:00pm they will not open again till 6:00am the next day. So if you are not back in time you will not be able to get back to your campsite. The positives of staying here are you on the side of the St Johns river where Little Talbot Island and Big Talbot Island State Parks are located. Boneyard Beach on Big Talbot Island is like Driftwood Beach on Jekyll Island for dead trees. Though it is a very good beach there is a long walk to the beach so to get there for sunrise is a chore. Little Talbot Island campground is closed for renovations so the closest campground is Huguenot. The campground also has a nature center that is open on Fridays from 3-5 and it is well worth it if you are there. They have many items (bird feathers, shells, whale bone) that have washed up on the shores. The park is clean and if you have the right vehicle (4×4) you can drive on the beach. There is a lot of traffic as the road going around the campground has been washed away so there is only 1 way the traffic can go. We would stay here again but only as a drive through stay.
The Jacksonville Zoo is about 7 miles down the road.
