Trip 12 – Corkscrew Swamp and the Loop Rd

A quick weekend away to the west coast of Florida. I saw that the Southeastern sunflowers were in bloom at Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary and I wanted to see them before they were gone for the year. We got a hotel for 1 night and drove over early on Saturday morning. We had never been to Corkscrew in October. This is at the end of the wet season so there was water everywhere. We are usually in this area in the spring which is near the end of the dry season. So this was different in all sorts of ways. The sunflowers were beautiful.

On Sunday we drove south to Tamiami Trail and stopped in Big Cypress National Preserve at Kirby Storter and to drive the Loop Rd. This is a 27 miles dirt road through dwarf cypress forest, pine forest and hardwood hammocks. You can get really close to animals especially alligators. We are never disappointed when we go to the swamp.
